I've always had problems with my Mac users (got many) especially those who use older browsers like NS4x (they're remarkably reluctant to give it up). Usually changing the CSS replacment variables in the tables to hard code gets things to render properly.
This has usually been on my Portal though, not the actual board. On my test board for VB3 they are having major probs. One of my Mods has just told me that when she clicks on Thread Tools it sends her to the bottom of the page where all the links are. Looks as ugly as sin. All the popup tools do the same.
This is in IE5 for Mac. NS4x well apparently that was even worse. I sent her to this site to click on the links here and she said it was doing the same thing. These links are at the foot of the page even before she clicks the links. I've enclosed a pic of the problem. Is this likely to be an html or javascript problem? My guess is that it's html and if I change the CSS replacement variables to hard code it might render properly and stay where it oughta in the drop down boxes.
I know the browser can render properly as I have the Quick Edit hack installed, and though we had problems at first, a bit of tweaking sorted it.That's not causing a prob though, as I said, this site also gives the same probs. If it's the javascript though, in theory I should be able to use the same code I have on VB2.26 adapted to the popup boxes, no? Would there be any clash between the javascript used on VB2x and VB3?
Or if I merely have to remove the CSS variables on the tables would that cause problems with VB3? It didn't for VB2x. Unless you know of a foolproof way to get things rendering properly for Macs at least in IE5?.looks hopeful. I hate Macs. So people who use incompatible browsers are able to use the tools, that is shown at the bottom of the page. There is no way to 'fix' it except to get your users to upgrade.

The Quick Edit hack works because it doesn't use JavaScript to find the position of the popup menu (I think).

I don't think that this is possible because the vBMenus use JavaScript to find the top and left position of the menu to be opened, and those browsers have problems with this (amongst others). NS4 was the popular Mac browser back in the day, but it sucks by today's standards. Mac IE has always been a lesser browser than its PC counterpart. MS doesn't even make IE for Mac anymore. Mozilla and Opera are both good Mac OS X browsers. If your users are using Mac OS 9 then. Yuck.Jake Yes, she apparently is using OS9.
I think it's only computer geeks who upgrade with every OS, because the gal's Creative Director of a thriving Advertising Agency and most of the machines at her office still use Mac Classic and (NS4x in her case). Apparently it has great FTP features. She does use OSX at home, however the drop downs don't work in that either as anothe Mac using Mod tried it. Fortunately she uses Safari, but I tend to work from the lowest common denominator and I know there are hoards of ancient browser users likely to use my board and give me earache when they have problems. It's like a rule.:P. There is no way to 'fix' it except to get your users to upgrade. Or bypass vbpopup for 'normal javascript ones?
I'm always being told that it's impossible to render these boards and Portals properly for NS4 for example, but sometimes it's just a tweak of code. Might lose some of the efficiency of the new code, but as many many people stick with these old browsers I can't have a half rendered board for perhaps a third of my members. Telling them to upgrade doesn't cut it, when it's easier for them to find another board that'll work better for them. (quoteI don't think that this is possible because the vBMenus use JavaScript to find the top and left position of the menu to be opened, and those browsers have problems with this (amongst others)./quoteIt's a little icon next to the normal edit buttons - was a radio button on the old board - and when you click it a little popup box opens directly over it. You can also have a link instead of an icon. But the box pops up on both NS4x and IE5 and you can change it's position. Pretty sure it should be possible to get the options in there so when you click the Thread Tools up they'll pop directly over the link.

Failing that, a tiny little drop down like the Forum Jump for those browsers, but not the big boxes as they are now, that's hideous. Fortunately I got rid of them, so I just got to suss the rest. Did you see the pic? That is unacceptable on my board. I got my pride mister!
Who knows how many people with crappy browsers will then think my board looks like that. Or bypass vbpopup for 'normal javascript ones?

Telling them to upgrade doesn't cut it, when it's easier for them to find another board that'll work better for them. You could rewrite those parts of the templates to make them look better. It wouldn't take much time, just use the vB2 templates as a guide, and make them look better. Go talk to Kier about that, I've never been able to get NS4 or IE5 to make any of my JavaScripts to work; their JS models are just too old. If you want to go ahead and try to get it working for older browsers, all the power to you; but it's probably just easier to change the 'boxy' appearance.
